Who is Responsible for Tech Addiction?

The tech addiction case asks who is responsible when digital products are designed in ways that may encourage compulsive use. Stanford Students Against Addictive Devices (SSAAD) argued that Apple should take responsibility for helping users reduce dependence on iPhones by changing software features that encourage constant checking, distraction, and overuse. Similar concerns have been raised by journalists, investors, parents, and technology critics, especially about the effects of smartphones on children. The main question of this case is whether companies like Apple are morally responsible for the effects their products have on users, or whether responsibility belongs mainly to parents and individuals who choose how to use those devices. This case highlights a modern version of the problem of many hands: designers, companies, app developers, parents, schools, and users may all contribute to patterns of harmful use, making it difficult to decide who should be expected to fix the problem.
