The Samsung Galaxy Note7 Battery Fires
Samsung’s Galaxy Note7 provides an example of product-development speed conflicting with careful safety testing. Soon after the smartphone was released in 2016, reports emerged that its lithium-ion batteries could overheat and catch fire. Samsung initially recalled devices from one supplier and distributed replacement phones. Fires involving some of the replacement devices then showed that the proposed solution had not eliminated the issue. Samsung expanded the recall and permanently discontinued the model. The ethical issue is whether the pressure to launch and protect a major product encouraged the company to announce a cause and remedy before the issue had been adequately investigated. This case underscores the importance of realistic product testing, supervision of multiple suppliers, transparent recall communication, and a willingness to reconsider an initial explanation when new evidence contradicts it.
