Roman Engineering
The Roman Engineering case centers on the relationship between technological achievement and the social and political conditions that make large-scale engineering possible. Roman engineers built an extensive network of roads, bridges, aqueducts, arenas, and public buildings, many of which lasted for centuries and some of which remain standing or in use today. These achievements were made possible not only by technical innovations such as durable cement, arches, domes, and advanced road construction, but also by the stability of Roman society, its legal system, its military power, and its use of enslaved labor. The central question of this case is whether we should admire Roman engineering mainly as a technical achievement, or whether we must also evaluate the social conditions that made it possible. This case highlights the tension between the impressive durability and usefulness of Roman infrastructure and the moral costs involved in building it, especially when engineering progress depends on inequality, conquest, or coerced labor.
