Intel and the Pentium Division Bug
Intel’s Pentium division bug considers when a rare technical defect becomes important enough to disclose publicly. In 1994, mathematics professor Thomas Nicely discovered that certain Pentium processors produced incorrect answers for a small number of division calculations. Most ordinary users were unlikely to encounter the problem, but it could matter in scientific and engineering work that depend on precise results. Intel initially offered replacement chips mainly to customers that could demonstrate that the error affected their work. After criticism from users, experts, and computer manufacturers, Intel adopted a broader replacement policy. The ethical question is who should determine whether a defect is significant: the manufacturer, technical experts, or the customers whose work may depend on the product. The case demonstrates that frequency alone does not determine the ethical importance of a defect; transparency and user trust also matter.
