Ford Pinto and the Value of a Human Life
The Ford Pinto case raises questions about whether cost-benefit analysis is an acceptable way to make engineering decisions when human lives are at stake. In the 1970s, Ford discovered that the Pinto’s fuel tank could rupture and catch fire in low-speed rear-end collisions. A redesign would have cost about $11 per vehicle, but Ford’s cost-benefit analysis concluded that the total cost of modifying millions of vehicles would be greater than the monetary value assigned to the expected deaths, injuries, and burned vehicles. Ford therefore opposed stricter fuel system regulations and did not redesign the fuel tank, even though the change could have prevented many burn deaths and serious injuries. The main question of this case is whether it is morally acceptable to assign a dollar value to human life and use that value to decide whether a safety improvement is “worth” the cost. This case highlights the tension between economic efficiency and the professional duty to protect public safety, especially when a company’s calculations treat death and injury as costs to be weighed against production expenses.
