Engineers Without Borders
The Engineers Without Borders case explores whether engineers have ethical responsibilities that extend beyond their formal professional duties. After discovering that a Mayan community in Belize lacked reliable access to clean drinking water, civil engineer Bernard Amadei organized a team of students and colleagues to design and install a sustainable water system for the village. This project became the first initiative of Engineers Without Borders, an organization dedicated to improving quality of life in underserved communities through engineering solutions. In this case, no legal or professional rules required Amadei or his team to volunteer their time and expertise. The central ethical question is whether engineers have a professional obligation to use their specialized knowledge to help disadvantaged communities when they are able to do so, or whether such service is merely admirable but optional. This case highlights the distinction between the minimum duties engineers owe in their professional roles and the broader moral responsibilities they may have as members of society.
