Gift/Complimentary Seminar Registration
The complimentary seminar case examines when an educational event becomes an inappropriate gift or attempt to influence engineering judgment. ABC Pipe Company invites engineers to a free one-day seminar about pipe products and offers refreshments, lunch, and a cocktail reception. Engineer A agrees to attend. The ethical concern is that ABC is not simply providing neutral education; it is also trying to make its products more familiar and attractive to engineers who may later specify pipe in construction projects. The main question is whether Engineer A may accept the free seminar without creating a conflict of interest. The NSPE Board of Ethical Review concluded that attending the seminar was ethically acceptable because the value of the benefit was limited and the event had a legitimate educational purpose. However, the Board also made clear that the answer would be different if the company offered something more substantial, such as travel expenses, a multi-day program, or a resort location. This case highlights the difference between ordinary professional education and gifts that may improperly influence, or appear to influence, an engineer’s judgment.
