The Challenger Disaster

This case concerns the ethical responsibilities of engineers when technical safety concerns are overridden by managerial and organizational pressures. Before the 1986 launch of the Challenger space shuttle, Morton Thiokol engineer Roger Boisjoly warned that unusually cold temperatures could cause the O-rings in the solid rocket booster to fail, potentially leading to catastrophic loss of life. During the prelaunch decision process, managers shifted the burden of proof onto the engineers, effectively requiring them to prove that the launch would be unsafe rather than requiring proof that it would be safe. The shuttle launched anyway and exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all seven astronauts aboard. The central ethical question is whether engineers and managers acted wrongly by treating a technical safety decision as a management decision under schedule and contract pressure. This case highlights the danger of ignoring expert judgement, normalizing known technical problems, and allowing organizational goals to override public safety.
